Vietnam Pictures From A Happier Country.

Despite the turbulent history of the country of Vietnam, the Vietnamese people show their determination to enter a modern world. During a first visit to the country of Vietnam there was evidence of the expanding economy on the street stalls, loaded with goods, much of which being imported from China. When some of the Boat People arrived in the UK for the first time, they brought with them accounts of difficult years and shortages of food and services. When the same people return to their home country, years later, to visit family and friends, or just for a holiday, they return with news of happier people and better times. These photos of Vietnam attempt to show the country and its people, as seen through western eyes.

Hanoi Legend and a Vietnamese Wedding In Haiphong.

** **

In the city of Hanoi there is the Turtle Lake with its own legend of a sword similar to the legendary "Excalibur" given to King Arthur by the Lady Of The Lake. It is said that when danger threatens the country of Vietnam the turtle will rise to the surface of the lake bearing the sword on its shell.

Happy people at a wedding in Haiphong.
When a Vietnamese friend in France heard of our plans to visit Vietnam, he gave us messages and gifts to take to his Grandmother still living in Haiphong.

The Vietnam photo of happy faces was taken on that visit to Grandma. We arrived in Haiphong from Ha Long Bay on the very day that a daughter was married. It is difficult to say who had the bigger surprise, Grandma and family or the visitors from the UK. Even though all the ceremonies had ended, a banquet was placed on the table before us, as we joined the happy guests.
